Across the world, many individuals are being encouraged to define their career paths earlier on in life. Whether it is to set oneself up for career success, or to “Keep up with the Joneses (or is it “Keeping up with the Kardashians” these days?),” students and young professionals feel the pressure more than ever to know who they are and where they are going in their careers from day one as a new graduate.
The New Career Committee at the 2016 Women Transforming Technology (#wt2sv) Event is comprised on young women 0-5 years into their careers. While these young professionals work across a variety of functions in the technology industry, they all have one thing in common. They are taking bold strides to define their own unique paths to professional success. Because of this commonality, these women sought to create two sessions for the New Career track at the Women Transforming Technology Event that would resonate with other young women in technology, while also highlighting real life questions and situations that arise on a regular basis for individuals newly minted into their careers. Executive Coach and Leadership Consultant in Silicon Valley, Linda Thompson will be facilitating the Discovering Your Strengths and Where Do You See Yourself In 5 Years? Mapping Your Goals sessions during the New Career breakout sessions. Learn more about these meaningful sessions below: 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM Discovering Your Strengths After years in school and now experience in the workplace, you know which skills are easy for you and which ones are challenges. Leadership is something we all must master. It doesn't matter how long you have been in technology, what your role is, or where you want to go, women in technology must master leadership skills to influence (with and without authority), to positively impact the progress of technology, and to change the world.
We had a very long list of topics we could have chosen for these sessions, but we decided to pick two that we feel are relevant to every woman, at every level: 2:00-2:45pm What Got You Here Isn’t Going to Get You There: Going from Tactical to Strategic Have you been too busy with everyday tasks to step back and look at the big picture? Have you been unable to connect the dots to begin your journey towards strategic thinking? Do you want to be able to move beyond day-to-day, reactionary thinking to a more long-term and future-focused perspective? Do you spend time each week working toward your company’s strategic objectives? Are you told you are not strategic enough? Then this session is just for you. We have a panel of extremely accomplished women who’ve been where you are and have transformed into Strategic thinkers. Come listen to their stories as they walk us through their journey of going from tactical to strategic. 3:00-3:45pm How to Move from the Passenger Seat to the Driver’s Seat: Negotiate, Persuade, and Advocate for Yourself A panel of women in technology will share their stories and provide guidelines and advice for how you can frame conversations and actions during the negotiation process. How to traverse obstacles and creating a plan to get the results you are looking for will be featured followed by Q&A from the audience. Both of these sessions are available on live streaming if you cannot make it in person, or want to share these sessions with others. No matter where you are on your career trajectory, we hope you will join us, share your experiences and learn something new! We will hand over our very long list to next years WT2 Committee in the hope they will have more time to cover leadership - this year we only had room for two. As, the conference grows and evolves more content will be added, and more voices to this community event. We hope next year you will consider joining us. Looking forward to seeing you on February 23rd! Be prepared to be inspired and to inspire! The WT2 Leadership Committee Welcome to the inaugural 2016 Women Transforming Technology Conference (WT2).
